A Powerful Way to Easily Get The Edge on The Competition

If you’ve been paying attention to my Snapchat (jwillsmk4) you might notice two things. First most of my story is kind of boring (haha). To be fair though my story consists of noteworthy parts of my day. Which means not the times I’m talking to people on Facebook. Usually this results in updates about blogging or FBA because well that’s my life these days. I try to inject fun when I can but the grind is actually fun for me so that’s what you get to see.

The other thing you might notice is that I pull some long ass days. Most of my days start at about 4:30am and end around 11pm. On days I’m not working at my job my day usually starts around 8 or 9am and ends at midnight. This means my days are regularly 16-18 hours long often longer. At the time of writing this I’m fresh off of a day running from 5am to 5:30am the next day. It’s unusual for me to pull a 24 hour day. If I do I’m usually just sleepy the whole next day.

But yesterday it was necessary.

As an entrepreneur I live by the motto “sleep is for customers…” Something I picked up one day and for good reason. It takes a lot of time to create an income and strive to achieve your goals. Customers just need to buy stuff so they have the luxury of sleep. Creatives like myself do not.

Like it or not we all have the same 24 hours in a day. With that in mind just how do you get the competitive advantage on your peers. Well whether you’re an entrepreneur, athlete, or worker bee you have just two options:

  1. Efficient time management.
  2. Sleep less.

I’m kind of bad at #1 because I get easily distracted often. I like to blame that on my ADD by the way. For this reason I roll with #2! Yes that means I’m the shit!!

There’s more to my reason for getting less sleep though. Even if I was the most efficient person with my time eventually my goals would require me to find more time. It’s just the drawback to being a high achiever. Thus getting used to #teamnosleep now gets me closer to my goals faster right?

I’d like to think so and here’s why.

An entrepreneur once told me, “it takes 10,000 hours of focused effort to develop professional level skill in any area.” But how long is 10,000 hours? Well hour-wise that’s roughly one and a quarter years. But, we can’t work 24 hours a day so let’s make that a realistic number. If you take that number and divide it up into about 4 hours a day it would be about 7 years. Now 4 hours a day I think is reasonable, yes work days are usually longer but remember I said “focused effort.” Focused effort means time spent actually doing the work. Not time spent talking about or researching the work.

7 years doesn’t sound so bad actually but what if I wanted to compress that time frame. Let’s say I want to shave off 2 years. Well if I add another hour and a half I could rack up 10,000 hours in 5 years. Not too shabby right? 5 and half hours per day of work is doable except for the fact that I already have a job that sucks up 10 hours a day 4 days a week. Do you see my dilemma yet?

Well let’s add to it…. My number 1 goal that I’m building toward right now is to retire from full-time employee and transition to full-time entrepreneur by the time I turn 35 years old. Ladies and gentlemen I’m 29 which means I don’t have 7 years to spare. Hence my thought process and the need to sleep less. Not forever but for a while to make up for lost time.

Now back to Snapchat and my day to day hustle.

I just want to put this out there now, I don’t document my days to brag, although some think I do. I document my day to show you what’s possible if you make a few sacrifices. Especially so, if you’re younger than I. I talk to so many people on a day-to-day basis that are 4-8 years younger than me. These “kids” are sleeping more than I am and complain about how little time there is to get what they need to done.

This confuses the shit out of me! Again we all have the same 24 hours in a day. How is it that some people get everything done and others don’t? The people getting stuff done make time the people that don’t make excuses. It’s the “I can’t” disease taking over and it’s sad.

I get it though, it took a while for me to give up my precious sleep.

But you always have that first option. Use your available time better! I’ve basically eliminated TV from my life most days. Barring the newest weekly episode of Naruto, One Piece, and Dragonball Super I rarely watch any TV. Sure I’ll Netflix binge from time to time when I have nothing going on. Even then I’m probably still working and have the TV on in the background. I also don’t go out very much when it’s not business related. Still I waste a ton of time everyday so sleep HAS to go.

For you, making these simple changes is all it will take to give you the edge on life. Of course all of this assumes you’re unhappy with your life thus far. If everything is good then ignore me enjoy your life and maybe even sleep more!

With all this talk about sleep I got curious.

Just how much sleep do I need? According to the National Sleep Foundation there is no exact amount that an adult needs. Instead they recommend and a range based off of the average that a healthy human in a specific age range gets. Naturally as a newborn we get the most but as we get older the recommended amount becomes less.

At my age range 24-64 the recommended amount is just 7-9 hours per night. Which means at 4-6 hours of sleep I’m coming up short…. Technically speaking that means I’m sleep deprived. But there’s one caveat, sleep is dependent on the individual over all. So listen to you body, for me I can function well off of 4-6 hours for others this might be a higher number.

One day I’ll probably get more sleep. But until I get to the point where I feel I’ve earned it it’s back to the grind for me. Hustle on my friends!!!
